BEST TIME TO VISIT LACHEN ON BIKE

  1. Spring, March to May

 

Weather: Mild and pleasant, 10°C-20°C (50°F-68°F)

Scenic features blossom with rhododendron flowers, among others. It is a very colourful time for biking, and the trails tend to be in good condition after spring thaw.

 

Summer, June to August

 

Weather: Warm; can be rainy at times. Temperatures range between 15°C and 25°C (59°F-77°F).

High Season: This is the best season for landscapes to appear lush green with bright colours; however, the trails could be slippery at times.

 Autumn : September to November

Weather: Cool and sunny with maxima ranging from 5°C to 15°C or 41°F to 59°F.

Highlights: The fall foliage makes the scenery beautiful, and the weather is not too wet-it is mostly dry. This is also the season of the smallest crowd, as compared to summers.

 Winter-December to February

 

Weather: Sharp cold, as the mercury drops several times below freezing, heavy snowfalls, rules the season.

 

Points of Attraction: It does not go well with the bikers as Lachen becomes a wonderland clothed in white. If you like winter sports, this may well be a time worth seeing but biking is out of the question here.

PERMIT NEEDED FOR LACHEN BIKE RIDE

Inner Line Permit (ILP):

 

Who Needs It: If Indians are visiting Lachen, they would require an ILP. Foreign nationals would require a Protected Area Permit (PAP).

How To Obtain: ILPs can be obtained from the Sikkim offices that have been designated, including the District Collector’s office in Gangtok or specific travel agencies.

Auxiliary Permissions:

 

Gurudongmar Lake Permit: If you are planning to ride to Gurudongmar Lake, then you will require a specific permit for the same. Usually, this can be done once you get your ILP.

 

Permissions from Local Authorities: One should consult local authorities and travel agencies or seek information related to any specific permissions required by them at the local level.

 

How to Obtain Permits

Make Preparations in Advance: Ensure that your permits are made at least two or three days before your trip.

 

Travel Agency Support: Join the locals to utilise the services of local travel agencies. They can make the entire process much easier and also help you with your directions.

Six-Day Bike Trip to Lachen: Itinerary

 

Day 1: Gangtok

 

Morning: I will arrive in Gangtok, which is the capital of Sikkim.

Afternoon: There are local markets that I would like to visit along with the Enchey Monastery. I’d also like to have dinner at a local restaurant. 

Evening: I prepare my bike and check all the gear. Rest for the night.

 

Day 2: Gangtok to Lachen (Approx. 120 km)

Morning: Depart early and drive to Lachen, Gangtok.  The road has some of the most beautiful mountain and valley views. 

Afternoon: A lunch stop can be taken at any roadside eatery.

Evening: Arrive at Lachen, get checked in there, take a short ride around the village, which is quite beautiful, and get prepared to spend the night after having spent some time there.

 

Day 3: Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake Approx. 67 km one way

Morning: Journey to Gurudongmar Lake- Amongst the world’s highest lakes. The ride is very challenging but thoroughly rewarding with breathtaking views.

Afternoon: Spend some time in the lake and click photographs against the backdrop of beauty all around.

Evening: Return to Lachen, dinner and rest.

Lastly

 

Day 4: Lachen to Yumthang Valley Approx. 25 km)  

– Morning: Ride to Yumthang Valley, called the “Valley of Flowers.” On a clear day, the scenery is very beautiful with vibrant flowers especially when in bloom in spring time.  

– Afternoon: Explore the valley and have a picnic. Relax in the tranquil environment. 

– Evening: Back to Lachen for overnight stay.

Morning: Explore the Thangu Valley, scrumptious for its views and peaceful ambiance. 

Afternoon : Observe the locality, visit the villages of the place, and simply bask in the blissful life. 

Evening: Dinner time in Lachen, and a bit of prep before you take off once again.

Now that you have caught all of Lachen in your eyes, it’s time to get back to Gangtok

Day 6: Lachen to Gangtok (Approx. 120 km)  

Morning: Hit the ride back to Gangtok.

Evening: Take a lunch break en-route, while also enjoying one last view of the surroundings.  – Night: Reach Gangtok, either explore the town or relax in your room and reflect on the bikers’ trail.

 

Trip Tips

Permits: Have the ILP/PAP permits ready well in advance of the trip.

Bike Check: Check the bike completely, so you are entirely prepared to roll out and carry along all the necessary tools to enable minor repairs.

Altitude Acclimatisation: Explore Gangtok for one day to get used to high altitudes, before entering Lachen

Hydration: Carry adequate water, with special attention to the long ride.
